Five Aspects to Evaluate Industrial Sewing Thread ‌Technical Specifications

How to evaluate technical specifications, quality requirements and performance indicators of high strength polyester or bonded nylon 66 technical sewing threads? These are generally following five aspects:


Single Strand Breaking Strength (N)‌

‌Directly impacts stitching performance.

Testing Instrument:‌ Tensile strength tester, equipped with specialized 
clamps for sewing thread.

Testing Method:‌ Take three 500mm long samples. Secure each end in 
the specialized clamps. Start the machine and stretch at a speed of 
500mm/min. Record the maximum force at break. Repeat three times 
and calculate the average for the result.



Twist Level (Twists Per Meter - TPM)‌

Appropriate twist level affects thread appearance and sewability.

Testing Instrument:‌ Twist tester.

Testing Method:‌ Zero the main and fine adjustment dials on the twist tester. Secure the test thread firmly in the left and right clamps. Insert a needle into the ply. Rotate the tester handle clockwise to move the needle from left to right until all twist is removed. Read the values on the main and fine adjustment dials. Multiply this value by (1000 / test length in mm) to obtain the TPM.


‌Colorfastness‌

Colorfastness below Grade 4 often causes fatal damage to the finished product.

Testing Instrument:‌ Crockmeter (rubbing fastness tester).

Testing Method:‌ Wind the test thread parallel onto the base plate. Start the machine, pressing the moving arm covered with test fabric against the sample and rubbing it back and forth 20 times. Remove the test fabric and assess the staining against the Gray Scale for Staining to determine the colorfastness grade. For specific finished products, washing fastness and perspiration fastness tests may also be required.


Elongation (%)‌

Elongation requirements can often be met by selecting appropriate material.

‌Testing Instrument:‌ Tensile strength tester.

Testing Method:‌ While testing the single strand breaking strength, the elongation result is generally simultaneously recorded by the computer system.




Light Fastness‌

Primarily considered for special products and outdoor items.

‌Testing Instrument:‌ Specialized light fastness testing cabinet (fade-ometer/xenon arc lamp tester).

‌Testing Method:‌ Expose the sample inside the cabinet according to the specified humidity, light source, irradiation intensity, and duration defined by the relevant standard. After exposure, visually assess the degree of fading by comparing it to the unexposed original sample according to the rating standard.
